Can someone explain how Sirius died in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix?

Bellatrix hit him with a Killing Curse, then he fell into the veil. It never really goes into detail in the book but I think the veil was used for executions; Dumbledore calls it "the Death Chamber."
